Scholar, 2026
Dr. Sohyun Kim has been an assistant professor at the University of Texas at Arlington College of Nursing and Health Innovation since 2023. Her research focuses on leveraging technology-based interventions such as video chat, wearable devices, virtual reality, and home monitoring to improve the quality of life and care for persons living with dementia and their caregivers. A recent feasibility study of Dr. Kim’s Video family visit Intervention for Emotional Well-being (VIEW) program provided weekly video family visits for persons living with dementia in long-term service and support (LTSS) settings, utilizing wristbands to collect physiological data and capture emotional changes during video visits. The study demonstrated that the VIEW program is feasible, while highlighting that flexibility and on-site staff facilitation are critical to its success. In the next two years, Dr. Kim will conduct a pilot randomized controlled trial of the VIEW program for residents in memory care. Dr. Kim’s research emphasizes that even as verbal abilities decline in the later stages of dementia, positive social engagement remains a priority in palliative care.
