Jane Lowers, PhD, MPA, is an instructor in the Division of Palliative Medicine, Emory School of Medicine. Dr. Lowers’s research focuses on adults aging solo -- those without traditional close family caregivers such as spouses or nearby children – with a goal of testing interventions that facilitate their ability to live independently in community longer. Preliminary work includes an analysis of NHATS data to compare social and help-giving networks for adults aging solo vs peers with spouses or children. Dr. Lowers also is recruiting people aging solo with early dementia and informal caregivers for a qualitative study of barriers and facilitator to help-seeking.

Dr. Lowers is a former medical journalist and earned a PhD in palliative care from Lancaster University in England. She is mentored by Dio Kavalieratos, PhD, and oversees operations for multiple palliative clinical trials at Emory.
