Dr. Pei-Shiun Chang is an Associate Professor at Indiana University School of Nursing and an affiliated research scientist at the Regenstrief Institute’s Center for Aging Research. Dr. Chang’s research focuses on optimizing the physical function and emotional well-being of community–dwelling older adults through Qigong (pronounced "Chee-gung"). Qigong is a holistic mind-body practice that integrates gentle movements, controlled breathing, and meditation to strengthen physical function and psychological health. The impact of subjective cognitive decline (SCD) in older adults often extends beyond cognition: 21% report depression and stress, while 38% experience functional difficulties due to memory loss. While SCD is a pressing public health issue, it also presents an opportunity for early intervention. Dr. Chang’s prior pilot studies highlight that Qigong may serve as a novel approach to address the vital needs of emotional well-being and functional performance in older adults with SCD, which are essential for quality of life. Thus, Dr. Chang’s next step is to seek funding from the NIA to investigate the use of Qigong in improving the emotional well-being and functional performance of older adults with SCD, while reducing their risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.
